Oppo is now the best-selling smartphone brand in China for the first time ever, overtaking Huawei. Figures from Counterpoint Research show that Oppo now has 21 percent of the world’s biggest smartphone market as of January 2020.

Its 21 percent market share put it ahead of Vivo and Huawei, which both achieved 20 percent. Apple and Xiaomi made up the top five with 16 percent each.

The numbers show that zippo sales went up by 26 percent year on year and increased 33 percent from December 2020.

The Counterpoint reports say that the new Reno 5 series had a successful launch due to its better specs at a lower price point than the earlier Reno 4.

It seems that Huawei’s struggles are the biggest contributors to Oppo’s emergence in China too.

According to Counterpoint, Huawei increased its focus on the premium market because of component shortages caused by US sanctions. This meant that Chinese distributors have been focusing on other brands for volume.

Huawei also had to sell Honor, as a result of the sanctions. Now Honor is a competitor instead of an asset further reducing its share.

The January figures aside, Counterpoint expects Huawei to continue its decline throughout 2021. Oppo is in a prime position to take up the available market share Huawei will leave behind with the launch of its latest flagship phone, the Find X3 Pro, which it plans to announce this week.
