Police operatives in Lagos have uncovered what resembles a baby factory and rescued 19 pregnant girls from the factory.
The police arrested two suspects, while the principal suspect, identified as Madam Oluchi, escaped. According to the police, Oluchi from Mbano, Imo State, brings the girls to Lagos from the South-Eastern part of Nigeria to impregnate them.
The police revealed that the gender of the babies determines their cost. Apparently, boys go for N500k, while girls go for N300k.
The police correspondent said,
“We rescued nineteen pregnant girls, between the ages of 15 and 28. Four children were also rescued. We recovered them from four different locations.”
“They include 32 Owosho Street, Governor Road, Ikotun; 29 Olugbeyohun Street, Olakunle Bus Stop Abaranja; 4/6 Anomo Street, Abaranja and the address mentioned above.”
The police arrested two suspects, named Happiness Ukwuoma (40) and Sherifat Ipeya (54), in connection with the case. The suspects allegedly brought the pregnant women from Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Abia, and Imo states.
The suspects did not receive formal medical training but operate as nurses. They are natives of Imo and Epe, Lagos states, respectively.
The suspects abducted the girls for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling the babies to potential buyers. Oluchi and her baby factory agents most likely tricked the girls under the guise of domestic employment.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu, has visited the scene and ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to take over the case.”
Elkana said the police are working with agencies and stakeholders to rehabilitate and resettle the pregnant girls and the babies.
