“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” Pope Francis said in the film.

Pope Francis while he was serving as Arch Bishop of Bueno Aires has said he was not against Civil Unions. However, this will be the first time he’s speaking in full support of same-s*x marriages and unions.

A Jesuit priest, Rev James Martin who’s been at the forefront of inclusivity for gay people in the Catholic Church praised the Pope’s comments as “a major step forward in the church’s support for LGBT people.”

“The Pope’s speaking positively about civil unions also sends a strong message to places where the church has opposed such laws.” Martin said in a statement.

There’s been an age-long conversation about inclusivity and acceptance for gay people in the Catholic Church.

While the Church teaches respect for homosexual rights, a 2003 Vatican document states that respect “cannot lead in any way to approval of homosexual behavior or to legal recognition of homosexual unions.”
