PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is one of the most popular and addictive games in the world, according to reports. Right now, the PUBG mobile game has more than 100 million monthly players. It is also the top mobile game with over $146 million in revenue in May 2019.
According to the Financial Times, the revenue comes from items and skins bought by PUGB Mobile players. It was adapted from the original PC game by a Chinese company, Tencent. It also made money from the Chinese exclusive version of the game, Game For Peace.
PUBG Mobile generated $76 million, while Game For Peace generated $70 million last month. This was according to a Chinese brokerage company, Great Wall Securities.
Game For Peace was released in May 2029 by Tencent after the Chinese government banned PUBG Mobile. The Chinese version of PUBG Mobile is supposed to be more patriotic to the Asian country. It also has less bloodshed, and the pool of blood is replaced with players getting up and waving goodbye.
China has always come down hard on video games it deems corrupting or anti-social. In February 2019, the government stopped approving video game licensing. Existing games also had to be rewritten or given time limits.
Tencent has had to put a time limit on its mobile game, MOBA Honor of Kings. It limited children under 12 to an hour and teenagers to two hours daily.
Also, in India, young people are getting arrested for playing mobile games. PUBG Mobile is one of the most popular games out there too.
However, all of these have not really affected Tencent’s sales. It seems like the company has been able to retain its audience. They also seem to be cashing out despite all the setbacks they faced.
