Qualcomm Unveils Gen 2 8cx Processor At IFA Electronics Show in Berlin

Acer and HP are gearing up to start selling products using the technology from Qualcomm in response to Apple and its soon to come Arm-based computers. Qualcomm at the IFA electronics show in Berlin unveiled its Gen 2 8cx processor for Microsoft Windows laptops and 2-in-1 devices on 3rd September 2020.

 

According to the company, the 8cx Gen 2 5G processor has up to 50% better performance than Intel’s hybrid Core i5 processor. It also has up to 58% better performance per watt of energy consumed.

 

The 8cx Gen 2 has 18% better performance in comparison to Intel’s 10th generation Core i5 processor. Also, it has a built-in advanced camera and artificial intelligence capacities, plus strong security.

Qualcomm says computers using the chip can last for multiple days on a single charge. The new processor is also the second computing chip to offer 5G connectivity through both sub-6 GHz and mmWave. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.

 

“How we work is undergoing a massive transformation that’s bringing mobility and connectivity technologies to the forefront. Qualcomm is laser-focused on helping to drive this transition,” Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said during a virtual keynote at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

 

Qualcomm announced the first generation of 8cx chips at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui in 2018. In 2019, the company released two new chips for cheaper Windows PCs. With the second generation of chips available, Qualcomm hopes to make it a mainstay in PC production.

 

Acer also unveiled the world’s first Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 notebook, the Acer Spin 7, at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The PC has a 360-degree hinge and supports both types of 5G. HP also said it will be making a product using the Qualcomm Gen 2 8cx processor. It, however, didn’t give any details.
