Veteran actor, director and producer Ramsey Nouah has said he’s unimpressed with the quality of acting in contemporary Nollywood.
The 50-year-old expressed his displeasure at the state of acting during the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) last week. There he said while acting in new Nollywood is better than what it used to be, the delivery is not matching with the improvement in technicality
He said, “I still find a lot of disconnect between the technicality and creativity in my industry right now. I see that the creative, which is the art part of filmmaking, is still not as deep as I want it to be.
“Performances from the actors are not deeply rooted. We have good quality technicals going on, but it’s almost like oil and water not mixing properly.”

Nouah whose career in Nollywood has spanned two decades further said film directors are more responsible for the poor delivery by actors than the actors themselves.
“If you can’t get an Oscar-winning performance from an actor, the fault is not the actor, but the director. If you can’t deliver as an actor, the problem is the director that cast you,” he said.
Last year, veteran actor Ramsey Nouah made his directorial debut in the sequel of 1992’s “Living In Bondage”. The 2019 hit sequel received nominations in 10 categories at the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2020. He bagged AMVCA Best Director award for the film. Nouah also went on to direct “Rattle Snake: The Ahanna Story” a sequel of another Nollywood classic. This time though, the reception for “Ahanna” was lukewarm.
