Apple is reportedly working on a foldable phone, and it’s already prototyping foldable screens internally. According to Bloomberg, a final device will likely take years to complete, however, the company is working on just the display at the moment.

The report suggests that the initial prototypes may be similar to the foldable screens used by Samsung, Motorola, and others. Bloomberg however reports that Apple is looking to use a “mostly invisible hinge” for its foldable screens. The screens will reportedly be able to unfold to around the size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The report also says that the company is also considering several screen sizes.

Apple hasn’t announced its interest in making a foldable phone, even though its major competitors already have foldable devices on the market. Samsung and Motorola already have multiple generations of folding phones. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold came out in April 2019 and Motorola started with its Razr series.

Bloomberg also expects that Apple will make minor upgrades on this year’s iPhone. The company is also considering an in-screen fingerprint sensor as part of the upgrades to this year’s iPhone according to the report. The reintroduction of the fingerprint sensor is most likely because of the pandemic’s effect and the impact of facemasks on the ability to use Face ID.

Bloomberg says Apple is “still testing” the technology so it can include it in its devices this year. Bloomberg also says that Apple is considering removing the Lightning port in favor of wireless charging on “some” models.
