Safari 15: Fraud Detection Service Finds Bug That Leaks Browsing History

Fraud detection site ‘FingerprintJS’ has found a bug on Apple’s Safari 15 which leaks out browsing history. This majorly affects information from Google account users. The site point out that Apple’s IndexedDB API which stores data on browser is the culprit for leaking out users history. Even more alarming, the site says this bug also affects hsitory from Private Browsing mode on Safari.

There is a same-origin policy which the API IndexedDB applies by. It simply means that if you open a tab on your browesr and another tab which has malicious ware, the second tab shouldn’thave acces to the information on the first tab. But all of this fails on Apple’s Safari 15,  Google for instance uses a special User ID which it share to its other companies like YouTube and others. The bug on Safari 15 now share those informations to other sites.

The reporting site says “Note that these leaks do not require any specific user action. A tab or window that runs in the background and continually queries the IndexedDB API for available databases, can learn what other websites a user visits in real-time.” “Alternatively, websites can open any website in an iframe or popup window in order to trigger an IndexedDB-based leak for that specific site.”
