Samsung finished 2022’s first quarter as the most popular smartphone brand worldwide with a market share of 24%, beating second-place Apple with nearly 17 million phones to spare.
The South-Korean company achieved this feat despite shipping 4% fewer phones than in Q1 2021, and Apple’s 8% market share increment also left it unfazed.
In the top five, there is Xiaomi with 39.2 million smartphone shipments and Oppo with 29 million, sitting at number 3 and 4, respectively. Meanwhile, Vivo occupies the fifth position with 25.1 million smartphones sold in the first quarter of 2022.

The lower-ranked smartphones all controlled 28% of the market share in Q1 2022, meaning that 72% of the market belonged to just five entities!
According to the complete Canalys report, Chinese-market-focused brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo suffered the most because the region had issues ranging from component shortages, inflation and COVID lockdowns. They all saw a loss of more than 20% compared to Q1 2021.
Again, African and Middle-East markets further ruined the hopes of the above-mentioned brands and saw them suffer more losses.
This explains why iPhone was the only top-five phone brand from the stat to report market growth. It is focused on the North American market due to its high-end specs, and the market saw growth during the period under review. It also explains Samsung’s numbers because the company had shipped its top of the line Galaxy S22 series during the period.
