You have probably wondered what happened to the Honor smartphone brand; well, here is how the former Huawei-owned company plans to storm the markets.
The year is 2020, and after months of battling the US choking sanctions, Huawei smartphones could barely keep up. It had the Chinese market in its grasp, but the rest of the world just seemed so far off. A decision needed to be made, and fast.
Then, in November 2020, Huawei decided that if its phone-making business would sink, it made no sense to drag Honor down with it. Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology bought Honor and severed ties with its parent company.
Barely a year and four months later, Honor’s CEO George Zhao has revealed to CNET that he has plans to turn the company into an ‘iconic global brand.’ How?
For one thing, the US sanctions on Huawei no longer apply to it. Honor can now leverage the power of partnerships to grow as fast as any other smartphone company. Qualcomm chipsets and Google services are the two most powerful Android offerings, and Zhao says he will embrace them completely.

Without the burden of having to do everything in-house, like build its own chipsets and set up an app store, Honor can now focus on other things.
One of its first strategies was releasing the Honor Magic 4 Pro — a high-end Android flagship. Before now, it had been forced to play second fiddle to Huawei, made mid-range devices while its parent targeted flagships.
While the goal is global domination, Honor’s CEO concedes that the company has to start somewhere. It has almost conquered the Chinese market, placing second in market share in Q1 2021. The focus is on Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Then, it plans to battle against US market toppers like Apple and Samsung.
