Sheryl Sandberg, the woman often credited as being responsible in changing Facebook into a money making machine, is leaving the company after 14 years. As COO, Sandberg was the second highest ranking Meta executive and she reported to Mark Zuckerberg alone.
As she departs, Javier Olivan, who works as Meta’s chief growth officer, has been assigned to take over. However, Olivan’s tenure as COO would be totally different from Sandberg’s.
Although Sheryl is leaving her role, she keeps her seat as a member of Meta board. Sources say that to prepare for her departure, she had been working with Zuckerberg for months to transition her duties seamlessly, leaving no gap in her absence.

Part of the new arrangement involves her replacement, Javier Olivan, Meta’s chief lawyer and HR executive all reporting directly to Mark.
While explaining her reason for leaving the company, Sandberg said: “It is a job that’s been an honor and a privilege, but it’s not a job that leaves a lot of time to do much else.”
In addition to serving as the top exec for Meta over the past years, she had also started leading Lean In, a global community dedicated to helping foster leadership, advancement, & inclusion for women in the workplace. Likely, she will be able to devote more time to this project.
Sheryl Sandberg had been one of the pioneers of ads on social media platforms and with new privacy policies making it more difficult to make money from ads, Facebook (or Meta as it wants to be known now) is moving is new directions.
When speaking to Alex Heath of The Verge, she conceded that she wished she knew some of the things she now knows back then, especially regarding how quickly users’ privacy could be eroded in favour of revenue.
