An American physicist and video game designer, Seamus Blackley, took to Twitter to share a very interesting adventure. It was a very bold mood as he recorded his interaction with 4,500-year-old yeast. As a bread-making enthusiast, he then decided to use this yeast to make bread.
Blackley took dormant yeast from ancient Egyptian pots and reactivated it. He subsequently used grains that were similar to the ones used thousands of years ago to reactivate the yeast. And, with the yeast, he was able to make a loaf of bread he described as delicious. Back in May, another group of scientists tried a similar feat. They tried to use yeast from 5,000 years ago to brew beer.
Blackley then teamed up with microbiologist Richard Bowman and Egyptologist Serena Love to make this ancient modern-day bread happen. According to Blackley’s tweet, “Using a non-destructive process and careful sterile technique, we believe we can actually capture dormant yeasts and bacteria from inside the ceramic pores of ancient pots.”
