On Wednesday, 30th October 2019, music lovers in Lagos gathered for Seun Kuti’s Industry Night. The event took place at Hard Rock Cafe, Landmark Event Centre, in Victoria Island.

 

Tagged “Seun Kuti and The Egypt 80”, the event was sponsored by top brands such as Budweiser and tobacco company Benson and Hedges.

 

 

The show kicked up by 10 pm with performances from upcoming musicians. Also present at the event were popular OAP Olisa Aduba and FalzthebadtGuy. Cousin to Seun Kuti, Dr Dotun Ransome Kuti was on ground to support this afrobeat musician.

 

At midnight, Seun Kuti, the man of the moment came on stage with the Egypt 80 band. Seun, who is the lead vocalist, sang with his hearts and energy.

 

On the ground was his back up singers who double as dancers for the band. He showed us a man skilled in playing various musical Instruments when he moved from the microphone to play the keyboard then proceeds to the saxophone at intervals.

 

Seun Kuti’s Music Career

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of the music legend and Nigeria’s biggest music export, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He was born on 11th January 1983.

 

While Fela was still alive, Seun was always with him. This marked his first step to being a prodigy. His music career started when he was very young, as he began singing for his father’s band, Egypt 80, at the tender age of nine.

 

He would open shows for the band, singing a select group of songs with Egypt 80 before his dad took the stage. Not only did he sing, Seun was also a developing saxophonist and percussionist. Then he entered the formal ranks of the band before he was 12.

 

 

After Fela died in 1997, Seun Kuti, only 14 years old, took over the leadership of the band. He has since led it to quite a number of its tours worldwide.

 

He was nominated for the 2019 Grammys for the “World Album” category but lost to the Soweto Gospel Choir.

 

This youngest son of legendary Fela Kuti is the true son of his father. He doesn’t fail to use his music to speak against societal ills and bad governance.
