Snapchat Family Center is a newly launched feature on the media sharing platform that lets parents see who their teens are talking to. Although, the conversations themselves will remain private.
This parental control measure comes not long after the company faced backlash for its location sharing feature which could put kids in danger. In a statement, Snap said that the idea to build this feature came from observing real life family interactions.
“Family Center is designed to reflect the way that parents engage with their teens in the real world, where parents usually know who their teens are friends with and when they are hanging out – but don’t eavesdrop on their private conversations,” the company explained.
As a parent or guardian, you can covertly report accounts that may seem suspicious to the Trust and Safety teams on Family Center.

However, the big picture here is that these concerned parents have to create a Snapchat account and learn to use it in the first place. Then, their accounts and their kids’ have to be ‘friends’ as well. In addition to this, the monitored kids have to give their consent by joining the parent’s or guardian’s Family Center.
For now, only kids within the ages of 13 to 18 can join a person’s Family Center and the creator has to be at least 25 years old.
In the coming weeks, Snap plans to add more features to the app to aid parents see new friends their teens add. It will also add extra content controls and a notification feature for parents to see when teens report an account or content.
Much of the safety measures that Snapchat (and many other social media platforms) tout as safeguards rely too much on kids being truthful about a lot of things when joining as well as being open about everything with their parents.
Frankly, it seems like these companies are passing the responsibility of safety in their space to potential victims and their parents.
