Social media platforms are stretching their limits. They are going beyond just carrying out their basic functions to venturing into other phases of online entertainment.

Snapchat is best known for its fun filters and geotag. Now, the live video and photo sharing app is looking to launch its new gaming app as early as April 2019.

Snap Inc., the developers of the app, have codenamed the gaming platform “Project Cognac”. It will include other games created by external developers. The games will be designed to operate on Snapchat itself.

According to reports, Snap Inc. is scheduled to reveal the new platform at its first-ever summit for content developers in Los Angeles on 4th April.

Rumours circulating the tech space also suggest that Snap has been planning the gaming platform for over a year. In a bid to increase user engagement, the company is allegedly looking to develop its own games and a multimedia messaging application before the end of the year.

However, this is not the first time that Snapchat will dabble into games. In April 2018, it introduced new lenses for playing augmented reality games called ‘Snappables’. The game was controlled using touch, motion, and facial expressions.

Tencent, a Chinese company that owns messaging app, WeChat and Riot Games bought a 12 per cent stake in Snap-in 2018. In January of 2019, Snap also bought out ‘Prettygreat’, an Australian game studio. All these to gaming as the new direction for Snap.

Snapchat experienced a dive in users after Instagram introduced the Instastory feature in August 2016. It mimicked a lot of Snapchat features. It is no wonder that the app is looking to gather traction with the upcoming features.
