Snapchat To Pay Creators $1 Million To Use TikTok Competition, Spotlight

Snapchat is officially announcing a new section of its app called Spotlight. It will surface vertical video content from users that’s more meme-like as opposed to the regular content the app previously encouraged.

The app will also pay creators to post on the platform in what seems like competition to viral video app TikTok. The company says it’ll share $1 million between the most popular creators on the app per day through the end of 2020.

This means a creator with a particularly viral video earns a large chunk of the $1 million pot. The amount each creator will receive is primarily based on unique views compared to the other snaps on the same day. Users can earn from their video if it’s popular for multiple days at a time. The amount to be earned does not depend on the number of subscribers that they have.

Snapchat will launch Spotlight in 11 countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia. The new section is to also have its own dedicated tab in the app.

Spotlight videos can be up to 60 seconds long and users can see snaps programmed to Snapchat’s algorithm once they log in. The algorithm is programmed based on what a user has viewed in the past and how long they watched.

It actually seems that TikTok is leading the way in the preferred means of sharing short videos; and other social media companies are now following suit. Instagram and Twitter recently released Reels and Fleets respectively and it is clearly TikTok-inspired.
