Sony’s PS5 will be available on sale in China from 15th May 2021. The company announced the date the console will be available to its Chinese users a little over six months after its original release in the US in 2020.
The disc version of the console will retail for around $600 while the disc-free or digital model will cost around $479. PS5 enthusiasts in China can already start making their preorders from today.
This announcement also means that the PS5 will launch in China before Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and Series X. Microsoft had received safety approvals to release the Xbox Series X and Series S there at the end of 2020, according to CNBC, but it isn’t available on sale yet.

Gaming consoles aren’t as popular in China, especially considering its population. This is because game consoles were considered illegal in China until 2014, meaning PC and mobile gaming was very popular. At the moment the country’s stricter laws make it hard to release consoles in China simultaneously with other countries.
It’s actually a tough time to find PS5 consoles anywhere in the world due to the global chip shortage and unexpectedly high demand for the consoles, so it’s interesting to see how available the consoles will be during the China launch. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan is, however, optimistic about the situation. He recently said he expects the stock situation to improve in the second half of the year.
