Sony has officially completed the acquisition of AT&T’s Crunchyroll. The deal was reported as $1.1 billion subject to a customary working capital and other adjustments, and the proceeds were paid in cash at closing.
Crunchyroll has been an underperforming arm of AT&T’s business. The company seems to have sold the arm to Sony to focus solely on its connectivity business.
Sony already has an anime streaming arm, Funimation. Crunchyroll purchase strengthens the company’s grip on the Anime business. Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, in a statement, said:
With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience”
“across any platform they choose, from theatrical, events, home entertainment, games, streaming, linear TV — everywhere and every way fans want to experience their anime,”
He goes further to say it’s “a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.”

The PlayStation 5 has sold more than 10 million consoles globally, the company announced. This is a new record as it has sold faster than the PlayStation 4 in the same timeframe.
Sony Interactive Entertainment, the parent company mentioned that they already attained the feat by July 18th, 2021, despite supply challenges from chip storage and a global pandemic.
Sony is gunning for the Anime streaming business, quite popular in the Asian continent and growing in the united states. Its PlayStation gaming business is already making loads of cash, and this acquisition should add to the war chest.
