Sony and Nintendo changing gaming subscriptions policy to stop charging inactive users

Sony and Nintendo are changing their gaming subscription policies to stop charging users for inactive membership accounts even if they have not cancelled.

Following an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into indefinite subscription charges in the UK, two gaming giants – Sony and Nintendo – are making significant changes.

Before now, gaming subscription services keep billing members as soon as their next payment cycle arrives. It does this regardless of whether the user logged in anytime recently, and this practice has raised concerns.

Instead of continuously charging subs until the user cancels, Sony has agreed that it will first reach out to customers who haven’t used their memberships for a long time but are still being charged. The company further said that it would instruct the affected customers on how to stop payments, but if they do not comply (or resume using the membership), it will cancel further payments.

It is not yet clear if Sony plans to apply this change only in the UK, where the investigation took place, or worldwide.

In Nintendo’s case, it says that its Nintendo Switch Online Service will no longer be sold with the automatic renewal option set as the default. Instead, customers will have the liberty to choose it for convenience or have to renew their payments manually after every cycle.

It adds that the change covers Nintendo eShop and its website in all countries and regions under Nintendo of Europe’s jurisdiction.

Honestly, every subscription platform should start implementing this as it is only fair to allow inactive customers to decide if they want to keep using a service or not.
