Lapsus$, a South American ransomware hacking group, claims to have obtained 190GB of sensitive data from the smartphone-making arm of Samsung.
If you know who the Lapsus$ group is, you likely understand the state of panic in which Samsung management would have found themselves following the news. In 2021, the group had broken into Brazil’s Ministry of Health and leaked data concerning the country’s immunization. Then, in January 2022, they defaced the websites of Portugal’s most prominent media group with ransomware. Recently, the group found themselves at loggerheads with NVIDIA.
You likely get a sense of what these hackers can do.
Lapsus$ claims that they have details such as bootloader source code for all recent Samsung devices, code related to biometric authentication and on-device encryption, and sensitive data from Qualcomm. Engadget explains that if the leak is authentic, then Samsung is in for a rough period.

We found vague statements online like Samsung’s officials saying they are accessing the situation, but the company has issued no official statement on the matter. It is also not clear what the group wants the time, and we cannot confirm if Samsung is ready to pay whatever ransom the actors are demanding.
In the case of NVIDIA, mentioned initially, the company decided to strike back by compromising their ‘machine’ with ransomware. For a group that seemingly does this for a living, their response to NVIDIA had been surprising.
“EVERYONE!!! NVIDIA ARE CRIMINALS!!!!!!!!! SOME DAYS AGO A ATTACK AGAINST NVIDIA AND STOLE 1TB OF CONFIDENTIAL DATA!!!!!!. TODAY WOKE UP AND FOUND NVIDIA SCUM HAD ATTACKED **THE** MACHINE WITH RANSOMWARE……. LUCKILY IT HAD A BACKUP BUT WHY THE F**K THEY THINK THEY CAN CONNECT TO THE PRIVATE MACHINE AND INSTALL RANSOMWARE!!!!!!!!!!!,” Lapsus$ had said (in all caps too).
