SpaceX employees write open letter calling Elon Musk an embarrassment

SpaceX employees have written an open letter stating that the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, is as much an embarrassment to them as he may appear in the eyes of some members of the public.

If anything, the employees who signed the letter wanted to separate the company’s statements from Musk’s infrequent internet tantrums. The letter was shared in SpaceX Microsoft Teams channel on Wednesday, June 15, according to The Verge.

In the letter, the signees agreed that the company is not staying true to its zero tolerance on s*xual harassment and general bad behaviour.

Part of the letter reads:

“Elon’s behavior in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us, particularly in recent weeks.

“As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX — every Tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company.

“It is critical to make clear to our teams and to our potential talent pool that his messaging does not reflect our work, our mission, or our values.”

In addition, SpaceX employees urged the company to publicly address and condemn the CEO’s Twitter behaviour, hold executives equally accountable for questionable behaviour, and clarify on its zero-tolerance policy while enforcing them consistently.

While the number of employees that signed the letter is not available, hundreds of comments on the Teams channel showed employees agreeing to its message.

SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell, who is also a longtime friend of Elon Musk, will receive a signed copy of the letter as well.
