SpaceX fires employees over open letter to Elon Musk

SpaceX fires several employees in relation to their involvement in the open letter to the company’s CEO, Elon Musk. The letter had criticised his public behaviour and Tweets, asking the company to distance itself from him and act on his violation of policies. Their letter did not have the desired effect as it instead triggered a retaliatory response from SpaceX’s president, who called it ‘overreaching activism.’

The New York Times broke the news of the sporadic firing in a report on Thursday before other sources corroborated it. A copy of the email that SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell sent also made its way into the hands of the public.

Without mincing words, she announced that the company terminated several employees due to their contribution to the letter. Part of her mail reads:

“The letter, solicitations and general process made employees feel uncomfortable, intimidated and bullied, and/or angry because the letter pressured them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views. We have too much critical work to accomplish and no need for this kind of overreaching activism.”

Contrary to her email, insiders involved with crafting the letter said that a large per cent of SpaceX employees agreed with its content.

It may just be the beginning of another controversy for Elon Musk as several labour lawyers who got wind of the incident are getting interested. There is a school of thought already that the company might be violating labour laws in firing the disgruntled employees.

None of the fired employees has expressed an interest in pressing charges, but if they do, the general consensus is that they have a leg to stand on.
