“Squid Game” Creator Says Studios Rejected The Show For Ten Years

South Korean Netflix original “Squid Game” after rising to No 1 in over 90 countries is going on to be the most-watched series on the streaming platform. But, ten years ago, it was too bizarre and no one wanted anything to do with it, not even Netflix.

Hwang Dong-hyuk created the story in 2009 while living with his mum and grandmum.

The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently spoke with The Korean Times and he admitted the world after a decade has evolved to be more accommodating of the plot.

“After about 12 years, the world has changed into a place where such peculiar, violent survival stories are actually welcomed,’

‘”People commented on how the series is relevant to real life. Sadly, the world has changed in that direction,” he added.

“The series’ games that participants go crazy over align with people’s desires to hit the jackpot with things like cryptocurrency, real estate and stocks. So many people have been able to empathise with the story,” Hwang continued.

According to reports, Hwang Dong-hyuk created the story in 2009 while living with his mum and grandmum. However, he could not get it to production as several studios deemed the plot too “gory, grotesque and unrealistic”.

He was forced to stop writing and sell his $675 laptop to make ends meet. The show was greenlighted by Netflix in 2019 and its co-CEO Ted Sarandos has been quoted saying it has a ‘very good chance’ of becoming their most popular show yet

The Korean survival drama series centres around a group of 456 adults struggling to pay off their debts. They enrol to participate in children’s games to win a cash prize of 45 billion. However, losing the game has “deadly consequences”
