StarTimes, a Pay TV company has just won the right to broadcast La Liga matches live for the 2020/2021 football season in Nigeria. This recent news means that that the football broadcasting industry in Nigeria is opening up to more players.
According to a PUNCH report earlier today, the company had been working on obtaining football broadcasting rights for some time now. Broadcasting live football matches is an undebatable advantage for Pay TV companies in Nigeria.
Stakeholders and viewers have been petitioning the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to end the live football matches exclusive broadcasting rights that only selected Pay TV companies have.

In January, replying to these requests, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, had directed the NBC to set up new regulations. Part of these new regulations will force companies with exclusive broadcasting rights to share them.
Many experts and authorities in the industry have mentioned that the move was targeted at MultiChoice. MultiChoice, owners of DStv and GOtv have enjoyed exclusivity of showing many live matches including the popular English Premier League.
Additionally, with StarTimes acquiring the rights to show La Liga for the 2020/2021 season; it may well be on track to get rights to air other European football leagues. This could open up the competition and lead to massive price slashes on subscription fees as well.
Also, the lower pricing scheme of StarTimes bouquet packages when compared to other major competitors may be a real threat. By getting rights to broadcast European football domestic league, StarTimes is close to bridging the ‘content gap’.
