Apple is delaying new iPhone 12 Pro orders till late November and December 2020. It is reported that the company was blown by the number of orders for the most expensive option of its latest smartphones.
A reason for the delay is said to be the shortages of one or two specific components used in the Pro models. According to Bloomberg, Apple is doesn’t have enough power management chips the iPhone 12 Pro requires. This is in spite of having multiple suppliers for the component.
Bloomberg puts it this way;
“Apple Inc. is grappling with a shortage of vital chips that manage power consumption in iPhones and other devices, people with knowledge of the matter said, complicating its ability to meet holiday demand for the latest version of its marquee gadget”.

Reports attribute the shortage to an increasing demand across a range of products and disruption in the supply-chain due to COVID-19. According to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), 5G smartphones require 30% to 40% more chip content versus 4G. TSMC is the main chipmaker for Apple.
Also, the disruption in the supply chain due to the pandemic is causing customers to buy huge shipments of components because they do not want to fall short. Huawei too had stocked up on huge shipments of components due to its September US sanctions.
Apple CEO, Tim Cook also pointed out the issue at a recent earnings call. He said supply issues are “not a surprise” because the company is only just ramping up productions. The CEO also said “It’s hard to predict” how long the issues will last.
