The rainy season is here again and we’re bracing ourselves for all the wetness. Before the rains go into full swing, here are a few tips on how to survive the rainy season in Lagos.
1. Check the weather report
Be sure to check the weather report before you go to bed or before you leave the house. This will help you plan your day accordingly so you stay comfy and unbothered despite the rain.
2. Get a raincoat or an umbrella
Whether the weather is good or not, always have a collapsible umbrella or a raincoat tucked inside your bag. The rainy season is very unpredictable. Even if it ends up not raining, it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
3. Get rubber sandals or shoes
The rainy season usually means the death of your favourite shoes. But that’s not going to be your story anymore. Swap your suede and leather shoes for a good pair of rubber sandals that can survive during the rainy season. No shoe funerals this year!
4. Dress warmer
The rainy season comes with a lot of cold air. Protect yourself from shivering on the road by ditching your cold-shoulder tops for light sweaters and jackets. You should also consider layering your outfits with cardigans and jackets that can be easily removed if the sun decides to come out and play.
5. Wear wigs
Nothing is worse than getting stuck in the rain and ruining your weave or having itchy braids. So this rainy season, get yourself a wig that you can snatch off and keep dry in case the rain catches you unaware. Savage, we know, but very effective.
6. Get a power bank
It is not rare to have power outages or traffic jams during the rainy season. Whatever the case, you can’t afford to have your battery dying on you. Store up power in a power bank so you don’t run out of phone juice.
7. Beware of mosquitoes
In this entire continent, the rainy season is code for mosquito season. Mosquitoes thrive in the rainy season so you will need to protect yourself from them. Get a good insecticide or mosquito repellent and protect yourself from malaria.
8. Use rideshare apps
If you don’t have a car, this rainy season, you should consider using rideshare apps more. You don’t want to be that person who can barely open their eyes on an okada. There are a bunch of ride-sharing apps to choose from and a lot of them have promo codes so they don’t cost too much.
9. Stock up on everything you need
Buy whatever you think you’ll need before you need it. You cannot start going out to get bread when there’s a storm outside. Stock up on food and other necessities in case it rains for too long.
10. Take vitamin C
During the rainy season, you are much more likely to catch a cold. To avoid the discomfort of a stuffy nose and balls of used tissues rolling around, be sure to add a lot of vitamin C to your diet. You could buy vegetables and citrus fruits or you could just vitamin C in the pill form.
Don’t let the weather get the best of you. Stay warm, comfy and healthy this rainy season. Don’t go away; check out the reasons why you might want to take a break from social media.
