Telegram announced that it has launched an alpha version of one-on-one video calls on both its Android and iOS apps. The company in a blog post said that 2020 had “highlighted the need for face-to-face communication.”

Telegram described the process for starting a video call in the blog post marking its seventh anniversary. To make a video call, tap the profile page of the person you want to call and tap the video call icon.

Telegram users will be able to switch the video option on or off at any time during a call. The video calls will also support picture-in-picture mode, so its users can continue scrolling through the app during a call.

Additionally, they will have end-to-end-encryption, like its audio calls and messages, a standout feature of the app.

“Our apps for Android and iOS have reproducible builds, so anyone can verify encryption and confirm that their app uses the exact same open-source code that we publish with each update,” Telegram wrote.

Telegram had announced that it would launch group video calls later this year in April 2020. In the blog post announcing the video calls, the company indicated that “video calls will receive more features and improvements in future versions, as [they] work toward launching group video calls in the coming months.”

The company claims to have reached 400 million+ monthly active users on the app and it writes; “[it is] one of the top 10 most-downloaded apps and is used all over the world to stay in touch with family, collaborate with classmates and coordinate coworkers”.
