Tesla has announced the first major redesign of the Model S since its launch in 2012. The new version will start shipping in March 2021 with a refreshed exterior, a simplified interior, and the option for a more powerful powertrain.

The powertrain will enable the car to travel at least 520 miles and go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under two seconds. Tesla claims that the new redesigned Model S with the updated powertrain is the “fastest accelerating production car ever made”.

The new Model S features some light updates to its exterior like a new standard large glass roof. On the inside, Tesla axed the portrait touchscreen and made it similar to what’s available in the Model 3 and Model Y. The vehicle is also to feature a new U-shaped butterfly steering wheel and a screen behind the center for rear-seat passengers.

Tesla also says that the Model X is also getting some touchups. The vehicle will get touchups on the outside and the interior update. It will also have a version with the new powertrain, however, its refresh is not as extensive as that of the Model S.

The Model S redesign will start at $79,990 for the “Long Range” dual-motor version that gets 412 miles of range. However, the version with the new, more powerful “Plaid” powertrain that goes 390 miles with that sub-2 second 0–60 time will start at $119,000. The “Plaid+” version that goes 520 miles will start at $139,000.
