The luxury electric carmaker, Tesla has finally said it is shutting down its factory in the Fremont, California after mounting criticism. The factory had stayed open for several days despite a local county order, causing an uproar. Tesla does not qualify as an ‘essential business’ according to the order, however, it had continued its operations, defying the order.

“In the past few days, we have met with local, state and federal officials. Despite taking all known health precautions, continued operations in certain locations [have] caused challenges for our employees, their families, and our suppliers,” Tesla said in a statement.

Earlier, the Fremont Police Department had written on Twitter that its police chief and other city officials planned to meet with Tesla management. This it said was “to discuss cooperation for compliance” with the order, which took effect on 17th February 2020.

The police department then later said that it was “very pleased” Tesla came up with a plan to comply with the county order.

Tesla is also closing its Almeda factory

The company also shut its Almeda county factory in Buffalo New York. Tesla, however, says “those parts and supplies necessary for service, infrastructure, and critical supply chains,” will remain open.

The County Sherrif also confirmed Tesla’s decision on Twitter. Saying the carmaker will suspend its production whilst the coronavirus pandemic lasts but minimum basic operations can continue.
