Tesla recalls 40,168 cars in the US due to possibility of failing power steering assist. According to CNBC, the models affected were Model S and Model X produced between 2017 and 2021.
The outlet mentioned a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which shows that the company was doing the recalls voluntarily. There is no mention of the supposed issue causing any accident or claiming lives.
The correction comes via a software update, pointing at the fact that more cars could have been affected but fixed over the air without requiring a recall. Meanwhile, NHTSA says that the defect was spotted in just about 1% of its vehicles and could be caused by its October firmware release.

“Reduced or lost power steering assist does not affect steering control, but could require greater steering effort from the driver, particularly at low speeds,” NHTSA wrote to the public.
In addition, Tesla said that it already rectified the problem in about 97% of the vehicles it recalled by November 1. Thus, the issue may have been totally resolved by the time that the NHTSA publicised the filing.
Owners of the affected vehicles are not required to take any further actions as well, said the car maker.
On the overall, business continues to look bad for the company as shares drop further. Investors are still wary of the going ons at Tesla, mostly due to its CEO, Elon Musk, activities in relation to Twitter. Also, there is the supply issue that is making it difficult for it to meet projections.
