A film in the Indie category titled, The Farewell, has beaten Avengers: Endgame in its opening weekend in the US. This was despite the fact that it was available in only four theatres. It has now bagged the biggest per-theatre average at the US box office.
In New York and Los Angeles alone, The Farewell raked in a total of $351,330 and $87,833 respectively per theatre. Meanwhile, Endgame had a per-theatre average of $76,601.
The film is set around a Chinese family keeping a secret from its female head that she only had a few weeks left before she dies. Lulu Wang wrote and directed the film. It features Chinese American actress of “Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians”, Awkwafina.
The Wall Street Journal described the film as “a funny, emotionally intricate and deeply moving tale of severed connections and renewed family ties.”
“The Farewell” is apparently so good, it has gotten a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. New York Post, while speaking on the film’s star, Awkwafina, writes that she “has gone from rapper to comedic powerhouse, and now, most powerfully, to indie darling in ‘The Farewell’. It’s one of the year’s sweetest films.”
The 98-minute-long film also got a 7.4 rating on IMDb and 88% on Metacritic.
