You can now benchmark your internet’s video streaming quality using the SpeedTest iOS app per an Ookla announcement. Users usually use SpeedTest to check general connection metrics like maximum download and upload speeds and latency, but this new feature focuses specifically on video.
It works by attempting to stream at a variety of resolutions, then measuring load times and buffering afterward. Ookla says it is adding the new test because of how much of our time spent on the internet involves streaming video.
The company points out that ISPs often “prioritize video traffic differently than other traffic”. The implication of this is that; the best way to benchmark video streaming performance is to just stream video samples because it “cannot be simulated across a network”.

In order to do a video streaming test, you have to use the SpeedTest iOS, as it is not yet available on other platforms yet. Ookla however says the feature is coming to more platforms soon.
During the test, the app will streams a video at a variety of resolutions; then it will provide you with details like your internet connection’s maximum resolution, and video streaming load time.
In the event you’re unable to stream videos despite the app saying your internet speed is fast enough to support it, Ookla says the app will link to DownDetector to check if a service is experiencing a downtime.
