The Updated Samsung Galaxy Fold Is Still Very Fragile

The Samsung Galaxy Fold experienced a month-long delay when early reviewers expressed displeasure over the foldable phone’s fragility. That came just after Samsung cleared its name over exploding phones. Months after shifting the launch of its next-generation device, Samsung finally released the Galaxy Fold. However, it came with strict instructions.

Unfortunately, it seems that the “fixed” version of the Galaxy Fold is still extremely fragile. Also, based on a new video the company released, which saw them begging owners to treat their new phones with a “special level of care,” Samsung is aware of it. A popular YouTube channel, JerryRigEverything, also carried out a durability test that proves it.

When Samsung first introduced the Galaxy Fold, it came with multiple issues. Reviewers experienced dust getting into the hinge and damaging the display. There were also nicks and dings on the soft plastic. However, the issues experienced were largely due to the accidental removal of a thin display layer that looked like (but was not) a screen protector.

Samsung reportedly fixed most of these issues with the second Fold by extending the top screen layer beneath the bezels so it would be impossible to peel it off. The smartphone manufacturer also shrunk down the gaps by the hinge and added plastic caps to prevent dust or debris from getting in.

Nevertheless, the video Samsung released told owners to handle the over $1,000 phone with kid gloves. More logically, the company advised against adding any additional screen protectors as that could interfere with the folding display. Other requests included not applying “excessive pressure” to the touchscreen when tapping it, which was a bit more unusual for a phone. In addition to this, Samsung cautions that the Fold isn’t water or dustproof. Also, the magnets that hold it shut can interfere with other magnetic products, like credit credits, hotel room keys, or medical devices. So many rules for a phone owners need to carry around and handle often.

Despite these warnings, the new Samsung Galaxy Fold is incredibly easy to break. JerryRigEverything, in a comprehensive durability test, showed that many of the issues that plagued the first attempt at the Fold are still here. The screen is still extremely soft and easy to scratch; even fingernails are capable of damaging the display. (Ladies, take note.)

The durability test also found that it was far too easy for debris to make it inside the display, which is troubling. Other parts of the test were more encouraging. The Fold does hold up admirably against attempts to fold it backward. At least that is a testament to the level of engineering that Samsung has put into the physical hardware.

In the video, Samsung also briefly promised to offer customers something called the “Galaxy Fold Premier Service.” However, beyond a personal setup session, training session and phone support, we don’t know what else it includes. It just might include an improved warranty for that delicate screen. We’ll find out soon enough.
