In order to address growing fear of increased taxation in Lagos State, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media, Gawat Jubril has said that the state has no levy on audio and visual contents.
In a Twitter thread on 4th September 2020, Jubril said; “Lagos State has no 5% levy on audio and visual contents of physical and digital platforms in Lagos State.” This statement came out after Executive Secretary, Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Mr Bamidele Balogun announced a 5% levy via a letter.
In addition, Gawat Jubril says that the Lagos State Government dissociates itself from Balogun’s announcement. Meanwhile, it also suspended the Executive Secretary for making an announcement that was not authorised.

Further, Jubril revealed; “The fifth pillar of the THEMES Agenda, the development policy of this Administration, is Entertainment and Tourism. Practitioners are partners in our effort to ensure that Lagos State remains Africa’s leader in entertainment.
“The Governor [Babajide Sanwo-Olu] Administration is not insensitive to the fact that the Industry has been badly hit by the effects of the COVID19 pandemic and empathises with this and other sectors of the economy.”
In conclusion, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media said that stakeholders in the Entertainment should disregard the initial letter.
The initial letter had been sent to Jason Njoku of IROKO TV, who took to his Twitter page to let others know about it.
I wonder if @NetflixNaija @FilmhouseCinema and @YouTube got one of these. Or just us card carrying patriots. 🇳🇬🙏🏾. Let me go for a run 🏃🏾♂️and then sleep. I will deal with this one tomorrow 😴. pic.twitter.com/gz0m4D6Bl4

When the initial letter surfaced, entertainers had kicked against it. They protested that the government was trying to stifle creative freedom.
