Netflix will be releasing ten of its films even before their streaming debuts. The streaming service has partnered with some major cinemas in the US to make this happen. Netflix is looking to work with the traditional film industry with this move.

 

Most cinemas usually seek a 90-day exclusivity period before they allow films on streaming services. This puts the cinemas at odds with streaming services who are looking to keep subscribers entertained with new entries.

 

Netflix has also been working to get more recognition. Apparently, streaming companies are getting the shorter end of the stick when it comes to awards. They have been deemed ineligible for big Oscar awards as their films are tagged TV films. However, this move to put Netflix films in the cinemas and will also give the films more opportunity at awards.

 

In fact, there have been bids to shut down streaming films from being eligible to the Oscars altogether. However, earlier in the year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences discarded the suggestion.

Netflix now plans to release 10 films in the cinemas before it puts them online. The upcoming Steven Soderbergh film, The Laundromat, is expected to hit cinemas in America on 7th September 2019. However, it won’t be available on Netflix until 18th October 2019. Also, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story will start screening at the cinemas on 6th November 2019. Similarly, it won’t get on Netflix until after a month on 6th December 2019.

 

Oscar has strict rules that a film has to be in a Los Angeles cinema for at least seven days before it can qualify for a nomination. Therefore, it looks like Netflix is ready to play by the rules to ensure this happens.

 

Other films Netflix will be debuting in the cinemas are:

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. It will hit the cinemas on 1st November before coming to Netflix on 27th November.

 

Dolemite Is My Name will be out to the cinemas on 4th October, but won’t debut on Netflix until 25th October.

 

The King will hit American cinemas on 11th October. It will debut on Netflix on 1st November.

 

Earthquake Bird’s cinema release is 1st November. Meanwhile, on Netflix, it will be 15th November.

 

Klaus​ has a cinemas release date of 8th November but will get on the streaming service on November 15.

 

On 15th November, I Lost My Body and Atlantis will come to the cinemas. However, they will both get on Netflix on 29th November.

 

Lastly, The Two Popes will get to the cinemas on 27th November while it will air on Netflix from 20th December 2019.
