Instagram has started rolling out a new pinned comment feature officially. The Facebook-owned company started testing the feature in May 2020 and says it has the potential to help you highlight positive replies and better moderate conversations.
With the pinned comment feature, you can pin any three comments on an Instagram post to the top of a thread. This way, you can better control the comments and highlight positivity while moderating abusive or hateful comments because they will be further down the thread.
Instagram’s VP of Product, Vishal Shah announced the feature on Twitter, promising to allow you to “better manage the conversation”.
Today we’re rolling out pinned comments everywhere 📌
That means you can a pin a few comments to the top of your feed post. By highlighting positive comments, you can better manage the tone of the conversation. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/w2X5grdee7

This comes as Instagram and sister app, Facebook have been the target of protests for its seeming inaction in combating abuse and harassment abuse. Instagram on its part has intensified in its moderation of hate content under its current CEO, Adam Mosseri.
The company uses artificial intelligence to automatically block offensive comments. It also uses similar AI tools to warn users before they post potentially offensive or harmful captions.
To pin a comment:
— swipe left to reveal the options for reporting, deleting, and replying.
— you’ll see four options instead of three options, with the addition of a pushpin icon.
The pinned comment feature is Instagram’s lastest effort at stemming the tide of abuse and hate on its platform. Another such effort that it rolled out recently is the ability to delete comments in bulk and choose who can tag and mention you on specific posts.
