It is throwback Thursday, and with Valentine in a few hours, permit us to reflect on those times that Genevieve Nnaji and Emeka Ike blew our minds.
This Nigerian actor and actress were literarily the Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet (Jack and Rose) of Nigerian films. They made epic romantic films enjoyable to watch even before the popularity of cinemas in the country.
Suspense-filled, entertaining, a deep storyline and more, all were the characteristics of these films. They interpreted their roles in such dynamic and realistic ways that people found it difficult to separate who they were in real life from who they acted as on the screen.
Genevieve Nnaji and Emeka Ike acted together in films like For Better For Worse, Mine Forever, Passion and Pain, Beloved and many more.
Genevieve Nnaji took a long break from Nollywood for some time. However, she marked her return in 2018 with the production of her film “Lionheart”.

The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) picked Genevieve Nnaji’s “Lionheart” as the country’s submission to the International Feature Film category of the 2020 Oscars. However, the board in charge of the award had disqualified the film.
After a viewing, the Academy deemed the film to have too much English dialogue and thus, its disqualification. The Academy made the disqualification via an email sent, 4th November 2019.
It was later revealed that “Lionheart” was not vetted by the Academy’s International Feature Film Award Executive Committee. Yet, it is worth noting that Genevieve has made her mark in the film scene.
Now with the advent of Cinemas, we have new actors and actresses showing us how love is done in the 21st century. Yet, we get nostalgic for the Emeka Ike and Genevieve Nnaji kind of romance.
