TikTok is asking Facebook and Instagram for help to fight its ban by the Trump Administration. It’s interim CEO, Vanessa Pappas is asking the companies to ‘publicly join [its] challenge and support [its] litigation’.
TikTok faces a ban that will stop it from being downloadable or even appearing on app stores in the US. The Trump administration issued a new order banning its download in the US from 20th September 2020.
The US Department of Commerce announced the new order on 18th September. It prohibits download of both TikTok and WeChat beginning on 20th September. These apps will, however, continue to work in the United States for people who already have the app installed. The ban, however, will likely affect future downloads and updates.
Concerning the issue, the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri had Tweeted; “[A] US TikTok ban would be quite bad for Instagram, Facebook, and the internet more broadly.”

Pappas had replied; “We agree that this type of ban would be bad for the industry. We invite Facebook and Instagram to publicly join our challenge and support our litigation. This is a moment to put aside our competition and focus on core principles like freedom of expression and due process of law”.

TikTok made a statement in response to the Department of Commerce’s order. The company claims to have already “committed to unprecedented levels of additional transparency and accountability well beyond what other apps are willing to do.”
TikTok also stated that it is already planning to work with an American tech provider, which would “be responsible for maintaining and operating the TikTok network in the US, which would include all services and data serving US consumers.” Yes, it has not publicly announced reaching any such deal.
