TikTok is testing a dislike button for comments

TikTok announced that it is testing a dislike feature for users to show how they feel about a comment under a video.

In a blog post titled “New ways to foster kindness and safety on TikTok,” the social media company’s Head of Trust & Safety Cormac Keenan explained that the move is to empower ‘community members to stay in control of their interactions with others on TikTok.’

The blog post was placed under TikTok’s safety category, and Keenan assures users that the feature should ‘foster kindness’ on the platform.

By disliking a comment, users are telling the algorithm that they believe it is irrelevant or inappropriate to the video. This way, the algorithm can keep the comment section relevant by recommending that creators filter, bulk block, or delete such comments.

Additionally, you don’t have to worry about offending anyone when you dislike their comments because only you will be able to see that you took such action. The outcome of the test will determine if TikTok will eventually roll out the dislike feature for everyone or not.

For now, creators have several tools they can use to keep their comment space positive, including filtering all comments for manual review or by certain selected keywords. One more thing that a creator can do with their comment space is choosing who can comment on videos.

Twitter had recently tested out a feature like that, which allowed some accounts with a large following to downvote comments. Reddit has been using this feature for years, and it is the way the platform ranks content that users see.
