There was a lot of buzz on social media when Kendall Jenner supposedly joined the short video platform, TikTok. However, the only problem was that it wasn’t really Kendall Jenner.

The account had received a blue checkmark indicating the platform had “verified” it as model and reality TV star. However, in the end, it turned out to be an imposter. The account was online for less than 12 hours before it was removed.

“Within hours of verifying an account claiming to be Kendall Jenner, an internal review raised questions about the account’s authenticity, and TikTok immediately removed it,” a TikTok spokesperson told CNN Business.

The fake Kendall Jenner TikTok account had the handle @kendalljenner, attracting hundreds of thousands of followers before its removal.

The account posted two videos. The first was of Kendall Jenner standing in front of a bathroom mirror with King Staccz’s “Pretty Face” playing in the background. In just two hours, the video garnered 920,000 likes. The second, a slow-motion clip of Jenner dancing behind a curtain of pink streamers to “Safe Zone” by Lonr.

TikTok on its website says: “The verified badge is a quick and clear way to let you know you are following the real deal, rather than a fake or fan account”.

Users can lose trust if the verification issue happens repeatedly

However, the Kendall Jenner verification error highlights the video platform may still have some work to do regarding its verification process. It’s still unclear how TikTok made the error, the video platform has also not provided details.

“In an age where a blue checkmark is a symbol of power and influence, the gatekeepers of all social platforms need to ensure there are accurate reviews prior to verification to retain trust within their community and the marketing world,” CEO of influencer marketing firm Viral Nation Joe Gagliese said.

CEO of Influential, another influencer marketing agency, Ryan Detert says TikTok could lose users’ trust if this mistake repeats itself.
