US President Donald Trump, on Friday, 19th July 2019, said he would speak with Sweden’s prime minister to help free American rapper ASAP Rocky from prison. The rapper has been in prison for a month following his involvement in a fight at a music festival in Stockholm.
Trump tweeted on Friday:
“Just spoke to @Kanyewest about his friend ASAP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!
On 30th June 2019, Rakin Mayers, also known as ASAP Rocky, allegedly got in a fight with two men. The men had been harassing the artist and his crew. According to reports, Rocky tried to dissuade the men from following him and his group because of some broken headphones. Then a woman accused the two men of grabbing her, leading Rocky to get physical with them.
Rocky’s attorney and manager have come forward to say that the artist acted in self-defence after the men followed, harassed and assaulted them.
Kanye and Kim Kardashian West subsequently appealed to the president to help free the rapper.
On Thursday, Kim Kardashian West thanked the president and the secretary of state among others for the efforts they made to free ASAP Rocky.
In a tweet, she said:
“Thank you @realdonaldTrump, @SecPompeo, Jared Kushner and everyone involved with efforts to Free ASAP Rocky and his two friends. Your commitment to justice reform is so appreciated.”
Rocky has reportedly been in “horrific conditions”. They include solitary confinement, restriction of amenities for the most basic human functions, lack of access to life-sustaining food as well as unsanitary conditions.”
Last Monday, the artist’s legal team filed an appeal with the Swedish Supreme Court to have him released. However, on Friday, a Swedish judge ruled that Rocky was a flight risk. He also said that the rapper had to stay in prison for another week while they fully investigated the fight.
