Twitch will ban you if you do these three things

On Thursday, 3 March 2022, Twitch updated its misinformation policies to include three criteria that will get streamers banned from its platform. This new update involves a ban on users that it called harmful misinformation actors.

In a blog post titled Preventing Harmful Misinformation Actors on Twitch, the company said:

“We’re proud that Twitch can bring people together – but we do not believe that individuals who use online services to spread false, harmful information, have a place in our community.”

Before dividing the policy into three criteria, it claimed to have partnered with more than a dozen researchers and experts.

“We’ve partnered with… researchers and experts to understand how harmful misinformation spreads online and ensure our approach to mitigating its risks in our community is effective for Twitch,” the blog further read.

For Twitch, a harmful misinformation actor does all of the following:

  1. Persistently shares misinformation
  2. Shares misinformation that is widely disproven and broadly shared
  3. Shares misinformation on harmful topics like conspiracies that promote violence.

While every user can report suspected ‘actors’ by emailing OSIT@twitch.tv with the account name and other evidence, it may not be enough to kick a streamer off the platform. Twitch assures its users that its Off-Service investigations team will conduct thorough reviews into each case. Likely, this will reduce abuse of the report tool as we have seen on other social media platforms where a person is mass-reported for sharing an unpopular opinion.

The company will not stop enforcing its other policies such as Hateful Conduct & Harassment Policy, Self-Destructive Behavior Policy, and more.
