Twitter changes how you report other users for breaking rules

Twitter has changed how you use the report feature for users who break the platform’s rules. Here is everything you need to know…

Although it has been in testing since December 2021, the overhaul only came into effect after the company announced it. Twitter explained why the change was necessary, and mentioned the frustrating process of reporting an account or Tweet. Also, it has seemed to many users that nothing is done about the posts they report.

So, the new approach, called ‘symptoms-first,’ involves the platform asking the person ‘what’s going on?’ Here is how it explains the system:

say you’re in the midst of an emergency medical situation. If you break your leg, the doctor doesn’t say, is your leg broken? They say, where does it hurt? The idea is, first let’s try to find out what’s happening instead of asking you to diagnose the issue.

This is a vital change because, in some cases, users cannot point at the exact policy they feel that an offending post flouts. “In some cases the reported Tweet didn’t exactly break a rule, but bent it,” the company wrote.

Thus, by validating the reporter’s feelings, Twitter hopes to improve the quality of reports it gets going forward. Also, even where a disturbing Tweet does not technically violate any of the known rules, reporting it gives the platform more data to keep making the user experience better.

Now, after describing a violation, Twitter will present the user with a violation of terms that matches their description, and the user can confirm whether it is right or not. You can continue reading more about the changes here.
