Twitter has locked the official account of China’s US embassy. The reason was a tweet that Twitter says violates its policy against dehumanization according to Bloomberg. The tweet allegedly referred to Uighur women as “baby-making machines” prior to the Chinese government’s intervention.
The tweet which was originally shared on 7th January 2021, has now been removed by Twitter and in its place is a notice that reads that it’s no longer available. According to Twitter’s guidelines, the account owner has to manually delete tweets that violate its rules before it can unlock the accounts.

“We have taken action on this Tweet for violating our policy against dehumanization,” and said the platform prohibits dehumanization of a group of people based on their “religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity,” Twitter said in a statement to Bloomberg.
A spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry said that the embassy was “puzzled” by the lock of its Twitter account. She also says the embassy’s intention was to correct “fake reports and information related to Xinjiang”.
China has faced sharp criticism of its treatment of minority Uighur Muslims living in the Xinjiang province. Critics allege that it is forcibly sterilizing Uighur women. According to the United Nations, as many as 1 million Uighurs may be held in camps in the region. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had also recently said China’s treatment of the Uighurs amounts to “genocide.”
