Twitter Stops Users From Promoting Competing Social Media Platforms

Twitter now has a new policy that prohibits users from promoting their accounts on other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post.

In a tweet, the company said that it was making the change to prevent ‘free promotion’ and it has many users divided over the decision.

Twitter says that it still allows cross-posting from other social media platforms as well as links or usernames to the ones not mentioned in the beginning of this article. What this means is that you can still share links to your articles, YouTube videos and even TikTok content.

If you have Twitter accounts that mainly shows your presence on the prohibited platforms, the company will start removing them soon.

In an updated portion of its policy tagged ‘Promotion of alternative social platforms policy’, it wrote that tweets like “follow me @username on Instagram”, “username@mastodon.social”, or “check out my profile on Facebook – facebook.com/username” will be removed. Also, social media link aggregators like linktr.ee and lnk.bio are prohibited from now on.

“Additionally, any attempts to bypass restrictions on external links to the above prohibited social media platforms through technical or non-technical means (e.g. URL cloaking, plaintext obfuscation) is in violation of this policy. This includes, but is not limited to, spelling out “dot” for social media platforms that use “.” in the names to avoid URL creation, or sharing screenshots of your handle on a prohibited social media platform,” Twitter added.

If you violate this new policy, your tweets would be deleted and your account temporarily locked. Accounts with bio that violates this rule would be suspended temporarily.
