Twitter is strongly encouraging its employees to work from home. In a blog post, the company said it was mandatory for staff in Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea to work remotely.
Twitter also said it was “strongly encouraging” all of its 5,000 employees around the world to not come into work.
“Beginning today, we are strongly encouraging all employees globally to work from home if they’re able, our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus for us and the world around us,” the blog post read.
Twitter had already banned all non-essential business travels and events for its workers. It also announced that it was pulling out of this month’s South by Southwest media conference in Austin, Texas.
Jennifer Christie, Twitter’s head of human resources said:
“Our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus for us and the world around us.”

This is Twitter’s response to the news of cases of the viral infection that had been identified in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, and Placer counties. Four more people had died from COVID-19 in Washington state, bringing the total US death toll to six.
Google, Facebook and Coinbase also ask staff to work from home
Google is also asking all 8,000 of its employees in Ireland to work from home. This is in response to reports of a possible case of COVID-19 at the company’s offices in Dublin, Ireland.
“We continue to take precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of our workforce. In accordance with the advice of medical experts, and as part of that effort we have asked our Dublin teams to work from home tomorrow,” a Google spokesperson wrote in an email.
Facebook on its part has also started restricting social visits to its offices, according to The Verge. Digital currency exchange, Coinbase also issued new guidance to its employees, saying:
“Employees that are likely to get sick more easily or for whom getting sick would be particularly problematic should now work with their manager to move to 100% Work From Home.”
