Google had said that it would allow unlimited minutes for meetings in its Google Meet video chat platform for all users till 30th September 2020. That was in April 2020 and with the deadline approaching, it seems the company is sticking to it.
After 30th September 2020, free versions of Meet will be limited to no longer than 60 minutes for meetings. This meant that before now, a Google account could host free meetings with up to 100 participants, and no time limit.
“We don’t have anything to communicate regarding changes to the promo and advanced features expiring. If this changes, we’ll be sure to let you know,” a Google spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
Also from 30th September, access to advanced features for G Suite and G Suite for Education customers will end. This includes meetings of up to 250 participants, live-streams of up to 100,000 people within a single domain, and the ability to save meeting recordings to Google Drive.

The features are typically available to paying enterprise customers of G Suite. The enterprise package costs $25 per user each month.
The coronavirus pandemic has seen the world rely more on videoconferencing app to communicate, work and collaborate as in-person meetings have been limited. Google Meet profited from this large scale change in behaviour, passing 100 million daily participants in April 2020.
Google had used the free offer to entice more customers to its platform in a bid to catch up with videoconferencing leader Zoom. Now some of those features are off, and to get them, users will have to pay. With no more unlimited minutes, it will be interesting to see if the Google Meet sees its numbers drop, as that will be a true measure of growth for the platform.
