The Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to file antitrust charges against Google and its parent company Alphabet. The department could file the charges as early as this month, according to The New York Times.
Attorney General William Barr is determined to continue with the case despite the objections of Justice Department lawyers who say they prefer to be given more time to prepare their case. The Justice Department lawyers now worry that filing the charges as early this month could weaken the case.
The antitrust probe into Google began in June 2019 focusing on its massive search business amongst its other businesses. The Justice Department also opened another, broader probe in July 2020 which investigated if big tech companies were stifling competition. It said, “[the probe would] consider the widespread concerns that consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs have expressed about search, social media, and some retail services online.”

Google controls about 90 percent of web searches globally despite the more than 145 search engines available globally. Its rivals have complained that the company, by making its search and browsing tools defaults on phones with its Android operating system, is extending its dominance and suppressing the competition.
Google spokesman Jose Castaneda told The New York Times that the company will “continue to engage with ongoing investigations”. He also said that Google’s business practices enabled “increased choice and competition.”
