The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved trials for Amazon commercial drone delivery service in the country. It approved the tests on Monday according to the company’s statement.
Drone delivery services used to be the stuff of scientific imaginations but the pandemic of 2020 has made many things that we only imagined before a reality.
Essential services like delivering groceries spiked at the height of the pandemic panic. Workers who remained active during the trying period had to be highly alert and health-conscious to stay safe. But many companies had also started trying their hands at automated and machine deliveries.

One of such is the e-commerce giant, Amazon. It had applied for the approval to start trialing this service and the US FAA had finally granted it permission. However, Amazon is not the first company to get drone delivery services permission in the US, according to a Reuters report, Alphabet’s Wing and United Parcel Services also hold such approval licenses.
This service will be under Amazon Prime Air and it has been working on autonomous and remotely monitored drone services. Its aim is to be able to complete orders in the country within 30 minutes.
The company already has a fleet of drones ready and this FAA approval is its next step. Amazon Prime Air has existed since late 2016 and its page describes it “as a future delivery system from Amazon designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones.”
Prime Air seems to have great potential to enhance the services that the company already provides to millions of customers. It would improve rapid parcel delivery and at this time, protect workers from infection as well.
