Lina Khan, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) chair, is under pressure to investigate TikTok over data practices. This time, it involves how the company’s China-based employees handle users’ data from the United States.
The Senators sent a letter to Khan earlier this week, calling for a new investigation. You’ll likely recall the number of investigations the video-sharing platform had to endure over the past months, even coming close to selling its business to American corporations like Microsoft and Oracle.
The latest investigation is an offshoot of a BuzzFeed News report about how ByteDance engineers in China had access to TikTok data from the US. While this may differ from the 2020/2021 Chinese government investigation, it is still a branch of the same tree. It appears that the skepticism against the viral video app never went away.

Part of the letter reads: “In light of repeated misrepresentations by TikTok concerning its data security, data processing, and corporate governance practices, we urge you to act promptly on this matter.”
And it is not just the letter, The Verge reported that last month, Brendan Carr, a Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, asked Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores. Also, following confirmation that China-based engineers really had access to US users’ data after CEO Shou Zi Chew’s response, the horizon is once again cloudy for TikTok.
Although, TikTok has said that it is working with Oracle on a technology that secures users’ data, and they will complete it soon.
